LTC 10th Anniversary Convening, 2024
“If you don’t archive your own materials, do you exist?”
--- Inspired by Jorge Huerta, the first Chicano Theatre Scholar
Institutional archives are facing funding cuts and employee shortages. They do not have the resources to seek out the current state of Latine Theatre. Meaning, it’s up to us as independent artists, teatros, and the community to build and maintain our own archives so that future generations can build on our legacies.
Over the last three years, the Latinx Theatre Commons has been working on the LTC Archive Project, thanks to generous support from the Wallace Foundation. In 2025, fourteen scholars spent time visiting archives across the United States to gather where materials live and be able to create a centralized hub to make the information more accessible. Over the last two years, we have interviewed archivists and artists to learn more about their archiving practices, the state of resources for archives, and recommendations for building one’s own archive.
Now we are going on the road to bring this information to each of you! This fall, we’ll be producing four LTC Archive Project Workshops. These are a series of in-person workshops for theatre artists on the practice of creating a personal archive. All artists are welcome - playwrights, directors, actors, designers, vocal coaches, artistic leaders, and more. Participants will learn about the process of creating a personal archive, tips and helpful hints for what can be included, and possibilities for creating your own process.
We’ll be in New York City, Chicago, Houston, and Los Angeles. We hope you will join us whether you are curious about archiving or have an archive yourself! All are welcome! Click the link below to RSVP.
